Super Bowl Halftime Show
A Super Bowl halftime show is held in between the first and second half of a championship game. For live entertainment, since no one at home or in the stadium wants to suffer through silence, a Super Bowl halftime show is presented. The biggest names in entertainment are invited to perform in front of an audience of a hundred million people. Super Bowl halftime shows are also expensive to produce, both in production and in paying the singer. The world is watching a Super Bowl halftime show and pressure is undoubtedly high for performers. Singers do sing live but sing over pre-recorded backing tracks, (as do bands) just so nothing disastrous will happen. With so much pressure on, it's little wonder that Super Bowl halftime shows are the center of controversy.
The Worst Of Superbowl Halftime Shows
The worst in Super Bowl half time shows may have been the infamous Janet and Justin Super Bowl half time show. In this Super Bowl halftime show Jackson and Timberlake shocked the world (or no, actually just America) by broadcasting a wardrobe malfunction in which Janet Jackson's breast was exposed to the world. Despite CBS immediately cutting to an alternate shot, the damage was done and the network received 200,000 complaints. Viacom and CBS eventually parted ways while the NFL banned MTV from every producing a halftime show again. The FCC meanwhile began madly fining CBS, once for each of 20 different stations that were offended. However, to the PTC and the FCC, this was hardly enough punishment. Soon the US House of Representatives passed a law that allowed the FCC to increase fines for indecency, while many still complained that CBS was not fined enough and that they should pay for every single station that felt the heat of “Nipple Gate.” Not surprisingly, most players involved in the incident deny that the exposure was planned and insist it was accidental. Janet Jackson's career has suffered since the Superbowl halftime show incident, though all Justin Timberlake has had to endure since then is a hot date with Jessica Biel.
2007 Superbowl Halftime Show - Prince
The 2007 Superbowl halftime show was received much better, thanks to an enthusiastic, show-stopping performance by Prince. The Superbowl XLI halftime show featured Prince sampling some of his favorite songs (both signature and sampled) along with a stadium soaking that complemented “Purple Rain” nicely. The Prince Super Bowl half time show received not only some of Prince's best reviews in years, but also claims of being the “best Super Bowl half time show in history!” But just when you thought that the 2007 Superbowl half time show proved that sexually charged moments are not needed to make football interesting, then Prince causes a stir over his phallic guitar imagery. Oh, well it was the thought behind the Superbowl half time show that counted.
