American Football History

You may be aware that American football history can be traced back to ancient civilization, though it was not always strictly regulated. Some forms of ancient football games used stones or pig's bladder as the “ball.” Folklore even suggests that England's Shrovetide football used the severed head of an executed convict as the ball. The earliest forms of football are undocumented, proving that this phenomenon of sports has a timeless appeal.

Where Did American Football History Come From?

But where specifically did American football history come from? As with most American entities, it can be traced back to Great Britain. Early football were associated with rioting and unruliness, leading to the banning of the sport in many areas between 1324 and 1667. Royals felt not only that the game caused crowd disruptions but that it was less practical than learning archery skills, which was a necessity of war. Eventually England learned that taking away the thrill of football from the masses was not helping, so they incorporated organized football games into public schools. They turned this mob activity into an organized sport where schools competed against one another in friendly competition. The earliest record of football sports being played at English public schools is listed at 1519.

The History And Development Of American Football

American football history evolved along with Britain's own sports, and by the early 19th century, American football was being played in North American schools, both university and high schools. The first football game played in the states under English FA code (considered college football) happened in 1869. However, this game took place in the association football sport, not according to the rules of professional football recognized today, which actually descended from rugby.

The start of American football history came in 1874 in a game between McGill University of Montreal, and Harvard University in 1874. Harvard had already been adapting to the Boston Game code, a different set of rules than most association football games taking place at the time so that they could play against McGill and alternate between these two sets of rules. Before long, Harvard had adopted McGill's style of rugby rules. Other US University teams followed suit. This new style of football became so popular that traditional association football became less popular and faded until the 20th century. In 1880 more rules were implemented into the game, including reduction of players, reduction of field area and the introduction of scrimmage. More innovations came in 1882 and the 20th century saw more rule changes, as well as the American football league history and the American football uniforms history.

The history of American football is certainly rich, with the earliest of origins, and the most contemporary history just decades and centuries removed. American football has also seen the American Football League history as well as the creation of the National Football League. When you know the history of American football you appreciate the sport all the more so.
